Daily Learning: 1 May 2020

I spent most of today working and looking at bikes and cat supplies with my wife, but I made time to continue the “Google Analytics for Beginners” online course. The lesson I completed focused on Overview Reports.

Overview Reports

As I discussed in my 22 April 2020 post, there are five broad categories of reports of in Google Analytics. These are,

  1. Real-time reports.
  2. Audiences reports.
  3. Acquisition reports.
  4. Behavior reports.
  5. Conversion reports.

Each of these categories of reports have an overview report and several sub-reports. The overview report summarizes the metrics of the sub-reports into a variety of graphs and charts. There are several important ways you can interact with the data on an overview report. To begin, you can,

  • Specify the data range for the report.
  • Create segments in the data to compare metrics within the report. The default segment is “All Users.”
  • Select the metric to be shown in a graph. For example, you may look at users or bounce rate or page views.
  • Select a second metric to be shown in the graph. This allows you to draw comparisons between two metrics over a given date range.
  • Annotate a graph.

You can do much more with overview reports and the various sub-reports, but this marks a useful starting point. I’ll discuss more ways to customize and utilize reports in Google Analytics as I continue this course.
